Website Downtime Checklist: What to Check First

Your website looks down. Use this simple checklist to separate a real outage from a local browser, DNS, SSL or hosting problem.

1. Check the URL from another connection

Try a phone on mobile data or another network. If it works there, the problem may be local rather than global.

2. Run a fresh website health check

A second check gives you another data point instead of relying on one browser tab.

3. Look at the exact error

A timeout, DNS error, SSL warning and HTTP 500 are different problems. The message is a clue.

4. Check recent changes

Think about deployments, DNS edits, certificate renewals, hosting changes or plugin updates made just before the problem appeared.

5. Check important pages separately

A homepage can be up while a booking, contact or checkout page is failing.

6. Decide whether you need ongoing monitoring

If the site matters to the business, let scheduled checks watch it after you've fixed the immediate problem.
